Faith, Hope, and the Fight Against Youth Unemployment in Cape Town

Ntokozo Mkhize 04 Oct 2025 6 views

If you walk through Cape Town on any given day, you’ll see young people everywhere dreamers, hustlers, students, and graduates with their own story. But sadly, too many of those stories include the same struggle: unemployment.

For many of our youth, finishing school or even university doesn’t guarantee a job. Some spend months, even years, sending out CVs and never hearing back. Others drop out of school early and find themselves stuck, wondering what the future holds. The truth is, youth unemployment isn’t just a statistic, it’s something you can see and feel in our communities every single day.

But here’s the thing: as children of God, we don’t believe the story ends there.

Holding on to Hope

The Bible says in Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you… plans to give you hope and a future.”

That verse has carried so many of us through tough seasons. It reminds us that even when the job market is tough, our value doesn’t come from a pay slip. God still has a plan for our young people plans filled with purpose.

The Role of Faith Communities

One of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in Cape Town is how churches and faith-based groups step in when young people feel forgotten. From mentorship programmes to skills workshops, the church has become more than a place to worship it’s a place to grow. And that’s powerful. Because sometimes all a young person needs is someone to say, “I believe in you,” and suddenly, the fire is lit again.

Here’s something else: unemployment, as painful as it is, has also led many young people to get creative. I’ve met young men and women who started small businesses out of necessity selling food, braiding hair, fixing phones, or using their art and music to earn a living. When you mix that determination with prayer and faith, amazing things happen.

So as a community, we can’t just tell young people to “wait on God” without offering support. Yes, faith is the foundation, but action is the building. That means helping with training, sharing opportunities, and reminding our youth that they are not alone. If you’re a parent, a pastor, or just someone with a bit of experience, mentoring a young person can go a long way.

Final Word

Youth unemployment is one of the hardest challenges in our country, but we believe God is bigger than statistics. At KISIMA Radio, our heart is to keep reminding young people that their story isn’t over, that they are seen, and that with faith, hope, and action, a brighter tomorrow is still possible.

Because at the end of the day, our youth are not just “the future” they are the present. And with God, they can rise above anything.
