Youth Voices in Politics
Young people think politics is not for them, for example, I could never see myself in politics, but I came to realise that what South Africa needs is the voice of young people. As young people, we face several problems, like not having enough jobs, Gender based Violence, and poor educational outcomes. These are not complicated issues; they are things we deal with every day. If the youth do not voice their opinions, rules will be made without considering us. When that happens, our challenges go unnoticed.
One of the important things about being young is that we view the world in a unique way. We have grown up during a time of social media, online activism, and awareness about the world. We are linked, knowledgeable, and not afraid to speak up against injustice. Our creativity helps us think of fresh solutions that are not how things have always been done. That is why it is important for us to share our ideas
where decisions are made. One other thing that the youth should not even consider when showing interest in joining politics is that they are too young and inexperienced, their youth should be the reason they enter politics and bring a fresh perspective to things and how to deal with day-to-day issues. Young people can bring change, look at the Soweto Uprising of 1976 for example, it happened because young people decided to take a stand.
Lastly, getting involved in politics does not mean becoming a politician, you can simply be involved by just voting, joining community initiatives, and talking about things that affect South Africa as a whole. That small step of starting an online forum is a step forward.
Young people are not just future leaders; we are making a difference right now. Our energy, creativity, and real-life experiences make our voices important in politics. By expressing our opinions, voting, and making sure our leaders do their jobs, we can create a future that meets our needs and hopes. Change does not happen quietly. It happens when we, as young people, take a brave step and ask to be listened to.
